Conventional wiper blades

Beam wiper blades

The word "beam" does not mean universal. Two flat beam wiper blades of the same length may have different pre-curves, connectors and mounting positions. A blade that is too flat, too curved or incorrectly mounted can lift at the ends, miss the middle of the screen or sit at the wrong angle.
Hybrid wiper blades
Most hybrid wiper blades use a conventional-style, jointed support structure beneath a shaped outer cover. The hinged sections distribute arm pressure across the wiping element, while the cover shields the mechanism and presents a smoother profile to the airflow.
They appear as original equipment on various Japanese and Korean vehicles, although fitment depends on the individual model and year. A hybrid blade can be a sensible replacement where the vehicle was designed around its height, curvature and connector.
"Hybrid" describes the blade's structure. It does not mean the wiping edge is a mixture of rubber and silicone, and it does not turn the blade into a beam design. Compared with a conventional blade, a hybrid is better enclosed and generally more aerodynamic. Compared with a true beam blade, it still relies on a jointed internal frame.

Rear wiper blades
A rear wiper is an application, not one universal construction type. Rear blades are often shorter than front blades and may use moulded plastic frames, compact beam sections or dedicated connectors that are unique to a vehicle family.
Rear glass can also have a tight curve, while the arm may park under a spoiler or close to body trim. Those constraints make "near enough" sizing risky. A blade that is too long may strike the trim or travel beyond the glass; one that is too short reduces the cleared area.

Specialty wiper systems
Some blades are designed for conditions or vehicles outside everyday passenger-car use:

None of these systems can compensate for a badly worn arm, a twisted connector or a blade whose geometry does not suit the windscreen.
Poor pressure distribution usually shows up as:
- an unwiped patch in the centre or at one end
- streaks that return in the same part of each sweep
- skipping or chattering as the blade changes direction
- the blade lifting from the glass at road speed
- excessive drag, noise or a blade that rolls onto its side
Clean the glass and wiping edge before blaming the blade type. Road film, wax and embedded grit can produce the same symptoms. If the problem continues with clean glass and a sound wiper arm, check the blade's fitment, connector engagement and condition.
Connector compatibility: the detail that catches buyers out
The blade is attached to the wiper arm through a specific connector. Common front-arm fittings include J-hook, push button, top or slim lock, pinch tab, side pin, side lock and bayonet, with further variations within those groups. Rear systems are even more vehicle-specific.
Blade design and connector design are separate. A car may use a J-hook conventional blade, a J-hook beam blade or a connector found only on a particular beam system. An adapter can make some combinations possible, but it does not prove that the blade's length, curve or mounting height is correct.

- Confirm the vehicle's make, model, year and any relevant body or series variation.
- Check the driver, passenger and rear positions separately.
- Match both the blade length and the connector.
- Make sure the connector locks positively into the arm.

Do driver and passenger wipers use the same size?
