Generation numbers matter more than the familiar model names. Golf moves from J-hook on Mk3 and early Mk4, through side-pin and wide push-button fittings, to narrow push buttons on Mk7, Mk7.5 and Mk8. Polo follows its own sequence across 6N, 9N, 9N3, 6R, AW and AE.

Amarok adds a facelift split. The original 2H uses J-hooks, while 2H Facelift and NF use narrow push-button arms. Tiguan changes from a wide push button on 5N to a narrow fitting on AD1 and AD2. The commercial range has equally specific Transporter, Caddy and Crafter generations.

Body style still needs checking after the generation is known. Golf Convertible listings are front-only, while Hatch and Wagon versions can include a rear blade. Use the Mk, platform or chassis designation shown in the selector.
